Troubleshooting: no connection, no messages, no nodes
The computer doesn’t see the radio
Section titled “The computer doesn’t see the radio”- Try a different USB cable. Many cables only charge.
- Use Chrome or Edge for web flashers.
- Install the USB serial driver for your board.
- Linux “failed to open”: grant access with
sudo setfacl -m u:$USER:rw /dev/ttyUSB0(or join thedialoutgroup). - Put the board in bootloader mode: double-press reset on most nRF52 boards; hold BOOT while plugging in on many ESP32 boards.
The radio keeps rebooting after an update
Section titled “The radio keeps rebooting after an update”Do a full erase and flash again. On nRF52, use Meshtastic’s erase file, then copy the firmware. When switching between Meshtastic and MeshCore, always erase first.
Bluetooth won’t pair (Meshtastic)
Section titled “Bluetooth won’t pair (Meshtastic)”Remove (forget) the radio in your phone’s Bluetooth settings, then pair again from inside the Meshtastic app. The Meshtastic FAQ notes this is a security measure.
I can’t see any other nodes
Section titled “I can’t see any other nodes”Check, in this order:
- Region is set to
US(Meshtastic won’t join the mesh until it’s set). - Preset or radio settings match your local mesh. Meshtastic’s default (LongFast) may not be what your area uses. Arizona’s Meshtastic community uses MediumFast.
- Channel 0 hasn’t been renamed. Its name sets your frequency slot.
- The antenna is attached, made for 915 MHz, and the radio is near a window or outside.
- Firmware: Meshtastic and MeshCore radios can’t hear each other.
- Someone is in range. Check the groups and ask where the nearest node or repeater is.
Messages show as not delivered
Section titled “Messages show as not delivered”- A cloud with a line through it (Meshtastic) means the message wasn’t acknowledged.
- Test with a direct message to someone who will reply; channel messages can look delivered when only one nearby radio repeated them.
- On MeshCore, make sure a repeater is in range; companions don’t relay for each other.
The battery dies quickly
Section titled “The battery dies quickly”- ESP32 boards use much more power than nRF52 boards. For long battery life, choose nRF52.
- Turn off the screen, GPS and Wi-Fi when you don’t need them.
- Lengthen position and telemetry intervals.
