Add a weather/telemetry sensor (BME280)

IntermediateMeshtasticAbout 1 hour

You'll need

  • A Meshtastic board with I2C pins
  • A BME280 breakout (check if it's 3.3 V or 5 V)
  • Jumper wires or soldering tools

A BME280 uses I2C: four wires.

BME280 pin Board
VIN / VCC 3.3 V (check your breakout; some are 5 V modules)
GND GND
SDA Your board’s I2C SDA pin
SCL Your board’s I2C SCL pin

Look up the I2C pins in your board’s pinout. Power everything off while wiring.

Meshtastic auto-detects supported I2C sensors at startup. Supported environment sensors include the BME280, BMP280, BME68x, AHT10/20, SHT31, SHT4x and others. Restart the node after wiring.

In the app, open the Telemetry module settings:

  • Turn on Environment metrics (off by default).
  • Set the update interval. The default is 1800 seconds (30 minutes). Longer intervals save airtime on busy meshes.
  • Optionally show readings on the node’s screen. Temperature is always sent in Celsius; a Fahrenheit option affects only the on-device display.

Readings appear on the node’s details in the app on every radio that hears it. To keep history and graphs, send them to Home Assistant.

For sensor nodes that do nothing else, consider the SENSOR role. See Picking the right device role.
