Mount a rooftop or mountaintop repeater safely

AdvancedMeshtasticMeshCoreAbout Half a day

You'll need

  • A tested repeater node
  • A mast or mount
  • Grounding hardware
  • Permission from the property owner

A repeater in the wrong place can hurt a mesh. Ask your group where coverage is needed and which role or firmware they want (ROUTER or ROUTER_LATE on Meshtastic; repeater firmware on MeshCore).

  • Your own roof: check HOA rules and building codes.
  • Someone else’s property: get written permission and agree on access for maintenance.
  • Public land and existing tower sites: contact the land manager or site owner; many sites need a permit or lease.

Run the node outdoors for a week and do a range test. Confirm it holds charge overnight if it’s solar.

  • Height is your biggest gain. Get the antenna clear of the roofline and nearby obstacles.
  • Keep the radio near the antenna to minimize coax loss.
  • Point enclosure openings down and use drip loops.
  • Secure everything against wind. Arizona dust storms and monsoon gusts are strong.
  • MeshCore: change the default admin password (password) before the node leaves your hands.
  • Meshtastic: set up remote admin with admin keys so you can change settings without climbing back up.
  • Don’t put private channel keys on an unattended node.

Record the location, hardware, firmware version and settings. Set a reminder to check it after the summer heat and after monsoon season.
