Neighborhood and city meshes

A city skyline with rooftop repeaters linked together

Recommended firmware: MeshCoreMeshtastic

The problem

Handhelds alone don’t cover a city. Buildings, hills and distance block the signal between people on the ground.

Why mesh helps

A few well-placed repeaters on rooftops, towers and hilltops can link a whole metro area. Volunteers own and maintain them, and anyone with an inexpensive radio can join. Community networks like this exist across the US. West Coast Mesh in Southern California formally launched in August 2025 aiming for region-wide coverage, and the Colorado mesh group runs a MeshCore network.

In Arizona, the Arizona Meshtastic Community runs a mesh centered on the Phoenix metro that reaches toward Tucson. It also runs a node-hosting program. AZCOREMSH is building a statewide MeshCore network.

Which firmware

Both firmwares run city networks, and they handle growth differently:

  • MeshCore: only repeaters relay. The first message to someone floods through the repeaters, the reply records the path it took, and later messages follow that stored path. Fewer radios transmit each message, which helps busy networks. Up to 64 hops.
  • Meshtastic: any radio can relay (managed flooding), up to 7 hops. City meshes stay healthy by choosing roles carefully. The Arizona Meshtastic Community, for example, asks mobile radios to use CLIENT_MUTE, home and rooftop nodes to use CLIENT, and saves ROUTER for high, fixed sites with good line of sight.

Join the network your area already has; the two can’t talk to each other.

How to help

  1. Join and listen. Get a radio, connect to the local network, and learn how it’s set up.
  2. Offer a high spot. A rooftop, a tower or a friend’s hilltop property is worth more than an expensive radio. Ask the local group before putting up a repeater, so it fits their plan.
  3. Build a low-power solar repeater. nRF52-based boards sip power and suit small solar panels.

Next steps: Set up a MeshCore repeater, Mount a rooftop or mountaintop repeater, Plan coverage.
