Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V4
Cheap, has Wi-Fi for MQTT, and I2C pins for a BME280 sensor.
Recommended firmware: Meshtastic
Remote spots like a ranch water tank, a gate a mile down the road, or a weather station on a hill usually have no Wi-Fi and spotty cell service. Driving out to check them takes time.
LoRa was built for exactly this: small amounts of data, sent far, on very little power. A mesh node with a sensor can report temperature, humidity, pressure, air quality or battery voltage across miles, and run for months on a small solar panel.
SENSOR role that puts telemetry first.Meshtastic has the most complete telemetry support today, with sensor drivers, app display and MQTT and Home Assistant integration. Use MeshCore if your local network is MeshCore and its sensor firmware covers what you need.
Good Arizona projects to start with: a monsoon rain gauge, a stock tank level sensor, or a heat logger for a shed or greenhouse.
Next steps: Add a weather/telemetry sensor, Send mesh data to Home Assistant, Build a solar-powered node.
