Events and festivals

Festival tents and attendees linked by mesh radio

Recommended firmware: Meshtastic

The problem

Put tens of thousands of phones in one place and the cell network slows to a crawl. Texts arrive late or not at all, and finding your friends turns into wandering around.

Why mesh helps

Mesh radios talk to each other directly, so the crowd doesn’t matter to the cell network. At DEF CON, the Meshtastic developers shipped special event firmware, and attendees reported more than 2,000 nodes on one mesh, the largest known Meshtastic network at the time. Burning Man got its own custom Playa firmware in 2024, built by Meshtastic developers with the Burning Man community.

Limits

  • Too many radios can flood the air. At Hamvention 2024, the event mesh collapsed under traffic from a single user’s MQTT bridge. That’s why big events now ship tuned firmware or settings.
  • Big public channels get noisy. Use a private channel for your group.
  • Batteries run down over a long weekend, especially on radios with color screens.

Which firmware

Meshtastic, because event organizers and the Meshtastic team have published event setups before, and roles like CLIENT_MUTE exist for crowded meshes. If the event’s organizers run MeshCore instead, use what they use.

What to bring

  • A small radio with a long battery life. A card-sized tracker fits a wallet or lanyard.
  • If you’d rather not dig out your phone, a radio with its own keyboard and screen.
  • A charging plan: a power bank and a cable for every radio.

Next steps: Picking the right device role, Channels and encryption.
