Ham radio crossover

A ham radio tower with a Yagi antenna and a radio shack

Recommended firmware: Meshtastic

The opportunity

Most mesh users run license-free on 902–928 MHz. If you hold an amateur radio license, you have more options: amateur bands like 2 m and 70 cm, the higher power limits of the amateur rules (FCC Part 97), and tie-ins with your local emergency communications group. Hams have taken a real interest in mesh radio; there was a Meshtastic talk at the Ham Radio Village at DEF CON 33 in August 2025.

How it works in Meshtastic

Meshtastic has a licensed (ham) mode:

  • Amateur-only frequency regions (for the Americas: 2 m at 144–148 MHz, 1.25 m at 220–225 MHz, and 70 cm at 420–450 MHz) can only be selected in licensed mode.
  • Your call sign is sent as required for station identification.
  • Encryption must be off. In licensed mode, nodes send everything unencrypted.

Limits

  • You can’t mix licensed and unlicensed operation. A ham-mode node can’t talk on encrypted channels.
  • A LoRa radio built for 915 MHz needs a matching radio module and antenna before it can work on another band.
  • Higher power drains batteries faster and still can’t get past a hill. Height usually beats watts.

Which firmware

Meshtastic, because it has a documented licensed mode. If you’re interested in MeshCore, ask in its community about ham use before transmitting; we haven’t found official MeshCore documentation on a licensed mode.

Getting licensed

In the US, the entry-level Technician license includes the VHF and UHF bands above. Local ham clubs and volunteer examiner teams run classes and exam sessions.
